WOAH! The DoJ is suing Apple for Antitrust. What does the DoJ lawsuit mean for Fintech? Full breakdown and my takes below 👇👇👇 👩⚖️The lawsuit claims alleges Apple is. 1. Suppressing super apps that provide services across multiple devices. 2. Suppressing cloud streaming services. 3. Limiting messaging apps with blue vs green bubbles. 4. Sells smartwatches that only work with iPhones. 5, Denies access to non-Apple digital wallets and tap-to-pay. 👩⚖️ On Fintech specifically, the suit alleges Apple. 1) Blocks access to tap-to-pay (NFC chips) to 3rd parties. 2) It does not allow alternatives to the Apple Wallet to store credit cards, IDs, or tickets in the app. 3) Apple does not allow subscriptions and in-app purchases from 3rd party wallets. 4) Apple Wallet only supports Apple Pay and does not offer 3rd-party payment services. 5) Use this position to extract rent from banks and payment companies. 🧠 What does this mean for Fintech? 🧠 The biggest thing in Fintech since Visa/Plaid. The DoJ has been here before, but that was breaking up a potential deal. Apple has live products, and millions of customers use them. 🧠 This is huge but won’t resolve quickly. Apple is litigious and is fighting the EU every step of the way. They did ultimately yield and make NFC and app side-loading available, but only in the EU. By doing so, Apple forced the DoJ to act. 🧠 Apple has gone from the darling of tech to widely regarded as the villain. The Apple ecosystem “just works” like magic, and part of that is because they control the ecosystem. But now they’re too big and too important to not be open to competition. Their privileged position is over. 🧠 The DoJ needs to succeed. Identity, payments, and ticketing are critical infrastructures one company can’t own. However, what the settlement ends up being will be critical. The devil is in the details. 🧠 Expect side-loading of apps and tap-to-pay for 3rd parties. It’s life in Europe, and companies like Overlay* already use it for in-store open banking (pay by bank) payments. #fintech #apple #doj #antitrust #appleDOJ

One major problem is that it does "Just Work" and is more secure than other options which is why it is so popular. I don't really see them as a villain, they just created their own ecosystem. Other companies are less focused and trying to do too much, they are perfectly capable of creating competing watches and tech that work the same.

This is a big deal. Right now it would even be hard for an app like Paze to get traction as a mobile wallet on iPhones, let alone any fintech startup's mobile wallet. Allowing alternatives to Apple Pay on iPhones could really shake up the market.

Go back to DoJ vs Microsoft. Same issue. You can’t own the garden and also have a monopoly on the plants.

Christine Massey This looks like the KARMA you get when you get too greedy! I will be buying AAPU (Apple leverage ETF) once the price action is not a falling knife anymore😉

In 97, just before Steve Jobs returned to Apple, this company had products with a multi-platform approach and complete openness for many diffrent types of users. But this is not in the DNA of Apple. They are almost gone due to being for everyone. Openness and inclusivity are not suitable for all.

The DOJ's lawsuit against Apple could indeed be a watershed moment for fintech, potentially opening up the ecosystem for more innovation and competition. How do you envision this impacting consumer choice and new fintech solutions?

Great points. Personally, as an Apple customer, getting fed up of this "villain" attitude you well describe Simon Taylor so pleased with this move from DoJ
